Ce double Cd s’ouvrant sur un titre du pianoless quartet de Mulligan est, à l’exception près d’un séjour parisien, consacré à des enregistrements réalisés avec le gratin des musiciens West Coast. La période voit évoluer le style du trompettiste/chanteur, en témoigne cette anthologie, intéressant survol commenté par Alain Gerber et Alain Tercinet.

- "Truly presents the essential Chet Baker" par All About Jazz
Hooray! Chet Baker, who died 20 years ago this month, lives again like a breath of fresh springtime air on these newly released CDs.
The Quintessence truly presents the essential Chet Baker; a two-disc selection of tracks from Baker's 1953-1956 recordings featuring an assortment of different players and group configurations. There is the quartet, quintet, sextet, ensemble (with strings), the orchestra and the big band (where it seems as if he raided the reed and horn section of the Stan Kenton band). There is also the “Moonlight In Vermont” track recorded with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and “Sonny Boy” with the Art Pepper Sextet. There is not enough space here to mention all of the personnel but notable is Zoot Sims' appearance on “A Little Duet” and the group on the last two tracks of the second disc: Russ Freeman (piano), Leroy Vinegar (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums), a tight cohesive unit. Freeman appears on many of the tracks and, since he worked a lot with Baker, has a special musical connection, including the same kind of sense of humor. These discs offer many Baker vocals including “My Funny Valentine,” the song with which he is most associated. Baker's talent lies in the simplicity and ease of his playing and singing. For those who were in the neighborhood over half a century ago when this music was being made, these CDs are a must for a wonderful wallow in nostalgia. For those who weren't, this is time travel at its best.

- « Des œuvres essentielles » par Jazzman
Ce florilège Chet Baker s’ouvre sur un titre du Gerry Mulligan Quartet au sein duquel le trompettiste se fit connaître à l’aube des années 50. Il enregistre à tour de bras et se rend à Paris en 1955, gravant pour Barclay quelques-unes des plus belles faces de cette période. Bien qu’appartenant à la belle histoire de Jazz West Coast, celles qui précèdent ont quelque peu vieillies. Contrebasse et batterie marquent mollement les rythmes et la technique du trompettiste apparaît bien fragile. On picorera dans ces deux disques. Certains préféreront les plages en septet ; d’autres celles qu’accompagnent des cordes, tel My Funny Valentine que Chet chante de sa voix androgyne. De retour en Californie, il rate sa séance avec Art Pepper et enregistre en big band. Le jazz se modernise. Pour y répondre, il doit durcir son jeu, le rendre plus agressif. Il le fait magnifiquement en quartet avec Russ Freeman, Leroy Vinnegar et Shelly Manne. Ce double CD ne renferme pas que des œuvres essentielles mais s’écoute avec plaisir et souvent émotion. - « Quelque chose de rare » par Jazz Classique

Les éditions Frémeaux jouent un rôle important dans la conservation du patrimoine jazzique. Rééditions d’albums, intégrales, anthologies se succèdent à un rythme soutenu. Le coffret Chet Baker (et le voyage parisien de l’automne et l’hiver 1955/1956), ses débuts en tant que leader, après une courte gestation aux côtés de Charlie Parker et Gerry Mulligan : « Je n’avais jamais rencontré quelqu’un dont les doigts réagissent plus vite à ce que ses oreilles percevaient. Il a surgi et personne ne pouvait dire qui l’avait influencé ni où il avait appris ce qu’il savait. On se trouvait en face de quelque chose de rare : un talent qui émergeait tout armé » (Gerry Mulligan à Les Tompkins).
