« A intringing and entertaining instrumental album » by Rock’n’Reel

Gypsy jazz meets world music on this intringing and entertaining instrumental album. Highly accomplished french-born guitarist Kamlo Barré had a rich and culturally varied up bringing taking in the Middle-East, North Africa, and the Iberien Peninsula. All these and other Mediterranean elements come to the fore throughout this set, the sounds of the souk mixing with Django’s jazz, and fado and Flamenco feeding into his approach, too. Take a listen to the title track, which incorporates all those elements and very cohesively, too – or try the lively jazz standard, ‘Limehouse Blues’, for a rathermore straightforward, swinging track (and there does seem to be a renaissance of this kind of material nowadays). Most numbers fall more or less somewhere along a line in beetween those two extremes. Norman DARWEN – ROCK’N’REEL
