L’Académie Napolitaine de Mandoline (Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana) est initialement fondée en 1929, à l’initiative de Raffaele Calace. Elle renaît en 1992 sous l’impulsion de mandolinistes napolitains soucieux de préserver cet héritage et ces œuvres traditionnelles d’un instrument inextricablement lié à la ville de Naples.
L’Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana est présidée par le mandoliniste Mauro Squillante, sa direction artistique est assurée par le violoncelliste Leonardo Massa. Depuis sa renaissance, elle représente le point de référence pérenne le plus important pour les amateurs, les passionnés et les artisans de la mandoline napolitaine. L’Académie offre un support pédagogique au public souhaitant se dédier à l’étude de l’instrument (par le biais de l’École Napolitaine de Mandoline, dirigée par Mauro Squillante) et fournit une vaste gamme de supports aux professionnels qui ont souhaité se recentrer sur cet instrument.
La promotion et la diffusion de la mandoline napolitaine assurée par l’Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana a logiquement donné lieu à la création d’une classe de mandoline au sein du Conservatoire de San Pietro a Majella (Naples), qui n’existait pas dans la ville «?mère?» de la mandoline. Cet essor de la mandoline napolitaine a également profité à l’importante usine locale de cordes «?Galli?», qui a créé un modèle de cordes pour instruments à plectre.
L’Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana se décline en formation de chambre et en orchestre, le Napoli Mandolin Orchestra, qui a sillonné le monde entier et a à son actif un important nombre de diffusions radiophoniques et de disques : plusieurs enregistrements ont été effectués pour la RAI mais aussi pour les radios nationales de France, d’Allemagne et du Japon. Des premiers CDs ont été publiés par le label Felmay – Dunja, notamment «?Serenata Luntana?» et «?Mandolini all’Opera?», œuvres symphoniques, fantaisies et romances issues de grands opéras. La collaboration avec le label japonais Respect Records a permis la sortie de trois disques : «?Cafe Napoletana?», «?Napoli Canzoni d’amore?» et «?Capolavori Eterni?», dont le public et la critique ont accueilli la parution avec enthousiasme.
L’Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana est également sollicitée pour des collaborations avec de nombreux artistes napolitains, dont Roberto De Simone, lequel a composé un concerto spécifiquement pour l’Académie, sous le titre «?Ceneri Napoletane?», en plus d’arrangements et transcriptions de nombreux morceaux du répertoire classique ou traditionnel. Une partie des solistes de l’Académie a été appelée aux côtés d’Andrea Bocelli pour le concert de lancement de son disque dédié au répertoire napolitain.
L’Académie a été invitée à Paris en 2007, à l’occasion de la Fête de la musique, et représente fréquemment la culture italienne à l’invitation d’Instituts culturels, comme en Suède, en Bolivie, au Maroc, ou lors de festivals internationaux comme aux Allumées de Nantes, au Rudolstadt Folk Fest (Allemagne), etc. Par ailleurs, depuis plusieurs années, l’Académie est le partenaire de la ville de Naples pour l’animation musicale des principales fêtes, dont le Nouvel an, Noël, l’Épiphanie et Pâques.

The original Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana dates back to 1929, when its foundation was proposed by Raffaele Calace, and it was reborn in 1992 on the initiative of Neapolitan mandolinists who were anxious to preserve the legacy and traditional repertoire of an instrument inextricably tied to the City of Naples.
The President of the Neapolitan Mandolin Academy today is the mandolinist Mauro Squillante, and its Artistic Director is cellist Leonardo Massa. Since its renaissance, the Academy has become the perennial reference for artisans of the Neapolitan mandolin, as well as those for whom the instrument is a passion. The Academy provides teachers for those among the public who wish to study the mandolin (through its Neapolitan Mandolin School under its Director Mauro Squillante), and has a vast amount of documentation at the disposal of music-professionals who wish to specialize in this instrument.
The promotion and diffusion of the mandolin are major activities within the Academy, leading to the logical creation within the Conservatorio di Musica San Pietro a Majella Napoli of a dedicated mandolin-class which hadn’t previously existed in the mandolin’s home of Naples. The expansion of the Neapolitan mandolin has also been to the advantage of Naples’ major string-factory Galli, which has developed a special set of strings for performers using a plectrum.
The Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana offers both a chamber ensemble and an orchestra, the Napoli Mandolin Orchestra, which has travelled throughout the world and has to its credit numerous broadcasts and recordings: several of its recordings were made for the RAI but the formation has also recorded for Radio France and the national radios of Germany and Japan. The first CDs were released on the Felmay–Dunja label, notably Serenata Luntana and Mandolini all’Opera, symphonic works, fantasias and romances taken from the great operas. Association with the Japanese label Respect Records has led to the release of three records: Cafe Napoletana, Napoli Canzoni d’amore and Capolavori Eterni, all of which have been received enthusiastically by both the public and the critics.
The Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana has also been solicited to work with numerous Neapolitan artists including Roberto De Simone, who composed a concerto specifically for the Academy under the title Ceneri Napoletane, in addition to arrangements and transcriptions of numerous pieces in traditional or classical repertoires. Soloists from the Accademia were also sought-out to accompany tenor Andrea Bocelli at the concert-launch of his own recording devoted to Neapolitan repertoire.
The Academy was invited to Paris in 2007 to appear in the French capital’s Fête de la Musique, and has frequently represented Italian culture at the invitation of Cultural Institutes as far afield as Sweden, Bolivia or Morocco, or at appearances in international Festivals such as the “Allumées” in Nantes, France, or the Rudolstadt Folk Fest in Germany. For several years the Academy has also been the music-partner of the City of Naples at major events such as New Year’s Day, Christmas, Epiphany and Easter.

Produit par Kenichi Takahashi (Respect Record) et l’Académie Mandolinistique Napolitaine, ce disque plonge l’auditeur dans la grande tradition des chants de Noël napolitains. Il témoigne également de l’influence considérable de l’Italie du Sud dans les musiques populaires occidentales étayée par la riche immigration partie de ce port au siècle dernier, que ce soit en direction de la France, de l’Argentine, ou des États-Unis.

Produced by Kenichi Takahashi (Respect Records) and the Neapolitan Mandolin Academy, this album takes listeners deep into the great tradition of Neapolitan Christmas songs. It also demonstrates the considerable influence of Southern Italy on the popular music genres of the west, thanks to those who emigrated from Naples in the last century to settle in France, Argentina and the USA.
