« The links between jazz and film music » par Pipe Line Instrumental Review

This is a swinging jazz album of course from this French quartet (piano/ guitar/ bass/ drums), led by acoustic and electric (Fender Rhodes) pianist Jean-Marc. However, the inspiration comes from the links between jazz and film music in the ‘50s and ‘60s. So, included are items by Henri Mancini, Michel Legrand, Ennio Morricone, Spike Lee and Stéphane Grappelli plus some others probably less well-known to English speakers. Mancini’s Charade is the best-known number, Vladimir Cosma’s Le Bal De Casse-Pieds is a fine New Orleans flavored number with hints of rhythm and blues, and Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues is, yes, a blues. There is some fine guitar work throughout from Dave Blenkhorn who sometimes adopts a slightly harder edge than many jazz guitarists. Nice packaging too. Norman DARWEN – PIPE LINE INSTRUMENTAL REVIEW
