CENTENAIRES GUS VISEUR ET TONY MURENA 1915-2015

This disc pays homage to a pair of the accordion’s monuments, Gus Viseur and Tony Murena, two “high priests” of the genre called swing musette (and artists whose centenary was celebrated in 2015). Accordionist DanielColin and violinist Mathilde Febrer cross swords here with great verve, boldly duelling their way through titles with fi re and subtlety. Produced by Dominique Cravic (Primitifs du Futur, Claire Elzière, Ukulélé Club de Paris etc.) for Kenichi Takahashi’s Japanese label Respect Records, and distributed by Frémeaux & Associés, this is much more than your average squeezebox “tribute album”. The Quartet here plays “real Paris blues” circa 1930, and that kind of music is authentic and universal. The album is a postcard in sound from popular Paris, and it belongs to Eternity. Augustin BONDOUX & Patrick FRÉMEAUX

BIOGRAPHIES

Daniel Colin
is a unique accordionist and musician. He’s the interface for everything that’s most demanding in jazz, and for everything that is deepest and most popular in musette. Born in eastern France (Pontarlier), he was called “Mr. Steel Fingers” by fellow-accordionist Jo Privat, and Colin has toured the world playing his own compositions – including appearances with The Primitifs du Futur – and made many records under his own name combining “musette” and jazz. In 2005 Daniel Colin received a well-deserved Gus Viseur Accordion Prize.
Mathilde Febrer began learning classical violin at the conservatoire when she was seven. After obtaining her prize she turned professional, working in various orchestral ensembles and also becoming a soloist. Very interested in jazz and improvised forms of music, she joined the CNR in Aubervilliers (with Pierre Blanchard), then the Atla School (where she taught for eight years), and took part in internships with Didier Lockwood, which allowed her to add the art of improvisation to her technical skills as a music reader. The combination of these two “trades” allowed her to further her career working with an eclectic range of artists — including Renaud, Jérôme Savary (“La Vie Parisienne”, “Zazou”), Henri Salvador, Charles Aznavour, Francis Cabrel, Stephane Sanseverino, Manau, Thomas Dutronc and Raphael Mezrahi — not forgetting the world of gypsy jazz, where she has played with the likes of Fred Loizeau, Ninine Garcia, Angelo Debarre, Raphael Fays, Romane and Adrien Moignard. Today Mathilde Febrer plays regularly with Dominique Cravic and his Primitifs du Futur group (with which she has recorded several abums), with the group of Martinique singer Valerie Louri, in the big band “Spirit of Chicago”, in the tango group “Encuentro”, and in Max Robin’s jazz quartet “Max et les ferrailleuses”, among others. In fact, the principal characteristic of her work so far is this diversity of music styles that continues to enrich even further her love of all forms of music.

Dominique Cravic is the founder/leader of The Primitifs du Futur, and the man behind the group’s exotic brand of music-forms inspired by the Thirties: “musette”, fox-trot, blues and beguine. Cravic has taken the band all the way round the world. Dominique is also a member of the Ukulélé Club de Paris group (with Joseph Racaille, Tony Truant, Cyril Lefèbvre, Brad Scott, Fay Lovsky and Pierre Sangra). As Henri Salvador’s guitarist (he plays on “Jardin d’hiver”), Cravic appeared in the latter’s last shows both in France and abroad.
Jean-Philippe Viret began in music at the age of eighteen and studied double bass with Jean-Paul Macé and Jacques Cazauran, and then harmony and counterpoint with Julien Falk. 1981 would see the foundation of the “Orchestre de contrebasses”, and Jean-Philippe has played with this bass orchestra for over thirty years. Regularly seen alongside numerous musicians of his own generation — Emmanuel Bex, Simon Goubert, Marc Ducret — the bassist has also played with the elder generation of musicians — among them René Urtreger, Georges Arvanitas or Michel Graillier — as well as foreign soloists of the calibre of Lee Konitz, Bill Carrothers, Dave Liebmann or Kenny Wheeler. From 1989 to 1997 he was the bassist with Stéphane Grappelli and his trio. In 1999 came the first concert by Jean-Philippe’s own three-piece group, the Trio Viret, with pianist Edouard Ferlet and drummer Antoine Banville, later replaced by Fabrice Moreau. With the Trio, Jean-Philippe has recorded seven albums and played numerous concerts, not only in France but also from New York and Montreal to venues in Japan, China and South Korea. Already nominated for a French “Victoire de la Musique” Award in 2003, the Trio won the award (the French equivalent of a Grammy) in 2011 as Instrumental Group of the Year.

Claire Elzière. Paris and the French Chanson genre are in Claire Elzière’s blood. She’s the Ambassadress not only for the Left Bank’s art of romantic song but also for the poetic, cheeky humour that unites Parisians on the other side of the Seine. Among her recordings are titles issued in Japan by Respect Record (« Chansons d’amour de Paris », released in 2010 by Frémeaux & Associés), and her own tributes to Allain Leprest and Pierre Louki produced by the Saravah label.
Grégory Veux. A talented pianist, composer, songwriter and singer, Gregory has been touring with Claire Elzière since 1997. He is a member of Têtes de Chien an extraordinary French vocal band (their first album, “Portraits d’hommes” was released in 2012 by Frémeaux & Associés). A brilliant and demanding artist on the modern Parisian scene.
Pascal Basile/Baselli was born into a family of musicians, grandfather, father and son: Gus Viseur the grandfather, and Joss Baselli the father, both renowned accordionists. Pascal, however, hasn’t followed in the family’s tradition: he plays the drums. He studied classical percussion at the Boulogne Conservatoire with Michel Cals, and the drums with Dante Agostini. To complete his music education he spent a year in Boston, USA, at the Berklee College of Music, which allowed him to make some major musical acquaintances… before returning to France to play jazz in a quartet alongside Laurent Cokelaere, Kalil Chahine and Bertrand Richard. Later he began dividing his time between accompanying singers like Renaud, Serge Reggiani, Frédéric François, Pauline Julien, Esther Philips, Djudjura, Karim Kacel and Peggy Lee, and activities in various bands and styles including jazz, pop/rock and international pop groups. He has also accompanied entertainer Jacqueline Maillan in her one-woman show, J’ai deux mots à vous dire. Pascal’s love of jazz has led him to appear with various ensembles in Parisian clubs such as the Petit Journal, the Swan Bar and La Blanchisserie, while in parallel he continues to uphold a certain “family tradition” playing with the Swing Valse Quintet.
