Fingertips - Soul Bongo - Hallelujah I Love Her So
From his relentless “Fingertips” to the frenzied reruns of Uncle Ray’s music, this anthology brings together (among others!) the contents of Stevie Wonder’s first two albums, made when he was known as “Little Stevie”. At the time, he was already a genius (at the age of twelve) and he became Tamla Motown’s muse, a hard-hitting keyboardist who laid the foundations of the Soul revolution.

Stevie Wonder, born Stevland Hardaway Judkins, was born on May 13, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, the third of six children. His father, Calvin Judkins, was a street peddler living on a small military pension, while his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, born Lula May Pitts on January 11, 1932, was a waitress. She has two children from a previous union with Paul Hardaway.
Born prematurely, Stevie Wonder was placed in an incubator and lost his sight as a result of oxygen therapy at too high levels, causing retinopathy of prematurity. When he was four, his mother left his father to live with Paul Hardaway and moved to Detroit. Stevie Wonder was introduced to music at an early age, playing the piano, harmonica and various percussion instruments, as well as being a regular member of the Pentecostal church choir. He began recording at the age of eight, taking piano lessons from Clarence Paul. It was Ronnie White, composer for the soul group The Miracles, who accompanied Smokey Robinson, who gave him his first chance. Little Stevie signed with the Tamla label at the age of eleven and released his first single I Call it Pretty Music, but the Old People Call it the Blues (45 rpm SP 17 cm Tamla 54061) in May 1962, followed by an instrumental album The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie (Tamla TM 233) in September under the name Little Stevie Wonder. The following month saw the release of his first thirty-three rpm as a singer: Tribute To Uncle Ray (Tamla TM 232) a tribute to Ray Charles, as well as a forty-five rpm La la la la la, with a duet with Clarence Paul on the B side: Little Water Boy (45 rpm SP 17 cm Tamla 54070), followed in December by the single Contract on Love / Sunset (45 rpm SP 17 cm Tamla 54074). He scored his first #1 hit with the track Fingertips and composed for various artists on the label, his first records reunited here generated 30 million dollars. Olivier Julien
