Tatavla was the early name of a popular, highly cosmopolitan Greek enclave in Istanbul. Greek immigrants leaving Turkey took this music with them, and it evolved in exile to become the popular rebetiko genre.
After the album Black Night Please Fall Over the World (FA8524), which focused on traditional Hungarian music, violin virtuoso Tcha Limberger continued his search for authenticity in music, exploring the roots of forgotten popular genres as he does here, with such wonderful accompanists as the Greek accordionist Dimos Vougioukas and guitarist Benjamin Clement.
Produced to the familiar high standards of U.K. independent label Lejazzetal, here the trio Tatavla offers music of infinite richness,   lled with festive melodies marked by hybrid accents from the East.

Tatavla

Any Greek who lived in Constantinople/Istanbul during the last century will have sweet and nostalgic memories of the Tatavla festivities. People would drive in horse-drawn vehicles to the Tatavla neighborhood to listen to renowned orchestras performing amane (lament songs) and other
Constantinople/Istanbul melodies, such as the ‘wine-songs’, a long standing Byzantine tradition of songs, to be savoured with a glass of wine.
Now Trio Tatavla takes us back to this joyful atmosphere with the characteristic sounds of the harmonica performed on accordion by Dimos Vougioukas, the violin and voice of Tcha Limberger, and the guitar or basso guitar played by Benjamin Clement.
This CD consists of 12 songs from the period before the rise of Rebetiko, when songs were dominated by tenors such as Antonis Dalkas, Giorgos Kavouras and Kostas Roukounas. On the instruments great soloists used to
perform, like Antonis Amiralis (Papatzis) on harmonica (a type of diatonic accordion), Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) on violin and Spiros Peristeris on guitar. They would play in different ensembles like estoudiantina or
politakia.
Trio Tatavla expresses with astonishing coherence and expressive variety all types of Constantinople/Istanbul’s music, in rhythms as hasapiko, karsilama, syrto, zeimpekiko, and the special category of amane. The Trio develops a lively connection between the instruments, which communicate so well that it’s like more instruments are being played. Tcha Limberger enters this game of sound and colour in the role of a singer of amane and as a performer or even a town crier, worthy of his great musical fame. He is a musical genius that feels at ease in all dimensions of expression.
In a very interesting role accordion player Dimos Vougioukas communicates with the other musicians, creating the basic canvas on which the colourful musical expression is sketched. As a result we witness an open sound with a rich tissue of harmonic notes.
In this never ending game, Benjamin Clement accommodates and accompanies very successfully, placing his guitar’s bass lines on the right moments and underlining discretely and efficiently all rhythmical forms.
Altogether this gives a solid result worth experiencing with all your senses.
Kyriakos Gouventas
Tatavla
