A lovely, loose but perfect rhythm section par Blues in Britain

More gypsy-jazz comes courtesy of Rodolphe Raffalli, with Un Pied Sur L’Ile. This is again swinging guitar music par excellence, with dazzlingly fast and accurate single string runs from Rodolphe over a lovely, loose but perfect rhythm section of just string bass and drums. Raffalli’s Corsican roots are in evidence through his choice of Mediterranean material, though he was raised in Conakry in Guinea (the playing at the very beginning of “La Complainte Corse” seems African-inflected), in Algeria, and in France. Some of the material is recognisably gypsy-jazz, some tracks are reminiscent of French popular songs, and others have American influences.
