JEAN-MICHEL DAVIS & ETHEREAL VIBES

From Hampton to Burton, in passing by Jackson and Hutcherson (yes, only names, without a doubt, that rhyme with vibraphone), this most complete and unlikely percussion instrument has established itself as a jazz chromatic keyboard, as rich as any piano. Under the inspired mallets of Jean-Michel Davis, with elegance and fl uidity, the vibraphone is affi rmed in this triptych-like album as a wonderful instrument of caressing bars: long notes lingering in the ear, cascades of crystal beads, gentle tumbling of percussions, refi nement of dosages, subtlety of nuances, friction and high frequency tremors, in short, everything that gives meaning to the etymology of the vibraphone: nearer and nearer to real voice vibrations. Pascal ANQUETIL

The great French percussionist Jean-Michel Davis (Les Movies Swingers, Les Primitifs du futur, Novelty Fox,…) author of two historic vibraphone-jazz method books, presents, for the fi rst time on record, compositions and arrangements from these works. 18 ethereal tracks, like swirls of smoke, reminiscent of the masterful contribution of this unique instrument to jazz history. Yesteryear Vibes
Stardust - Hoagy Carmichael - Mitchell Parish
I transcribed this memorable solo that vibraphonist Lionel Hampton improvised in Amsterdam during his big band European tour in 1954. According to the French jazz critic Franck Bergerot: “this is an expansive vibraphone expression on one of the most beautiful standards in jazz history”. As a counterpoint device, when the guitar enters, I chose to use a repetitive melodic motif on the marimba that is derived from Lionel Hampton’ s solo.

My Romance
- Richard Rodgers - Lorenz Hart
An ethereal composition by Rodgers and Hart is harmonized à la Bill Evans by pianist JoAnne Brackeen.
Too Blue - Victor Feldman
At the zenith of vibraphone players, one finds Victor Feldman and Milt Jackson. The discovery of Victor Feldman’s publication, Mallets In Wonderland, provided inspiration for the writing of the 10 études pour vibraphone jazz which was published in 1990 by les éditions Salabert.
Prelude To A Kiss - Duke Ellington - Irving Gordon - Irving Mills
This is a tribute to “the early Red Norvo trio” featuring Tal Farlow on guitar and bassist Charles Mingus playing cello.
Someday My Prince Will Come - Franck Churchill - Larry Morey
The introduction of this arrangement is inspired by the 1961 Miles Davis version. It is probably one of the easiest studies in my book 10 études pour vibraphone jazz.
Stella By Starlight - Victor Young - Ned Washington
This vibraphone’s introduction extends the harmony in the usage of the ascending melodic minor mode. Frédéric Loiseau dedicates the following improvisation to the marvelous guitar player, Jimmy Raney.

Invitation
- Bronislau Kaper - Paul Francis Webster
Here is a haunting theme by the composer of On Green Dolphin Street. This mood piece still sounds fresh and we present our most ethereal version.
The introduction of this tune with its unusual form is dedicated to the late Vernell Fournier. He is recognized for his fantastic brushwork during his years collaborating with the Ahmad Jamal trio. I had the pleasure of meeting him in NYC in the early eighties. When he later came to Paris with saxophonist Clifford Jordan, I interviewed him for Jazz Magazine and we performed in Paris with Gilles Naturel on bass and Dominique Cravic on guitar. I remember that we played Star Eyes!
Carinhoso - Pixinguinha - Alfredo Vianna
Maestro Pixinguinha composed this song, played in trio, in the early twentieth century. It is a typical example of languorous and romantic feelings.
Good Vibes Triptych
Luba - Jean-Michel Davis 3 ballades Pop éditions Henry Lemoine
When my children where younger, we would frequently visit my friend Dominique at his country home. We spent our days in our own world, getting up late, eating sporadically and musing in the garden while listening to music. I would read books from the Love and Rockets series, a major contribution to the history of graphic novels. Luba, created by Gilbert Hernandez (Los Bros. Hernandez) is a sexy, fiery-tempered woman, whose adventures, as depicted in several episodes, take place in Palomar, a small village of Central America and also in California. The marimba emulates the local color! The brilliant contribution of Guillaume Broquin on congas brings it all together.
Song For Nora - Jean-Michel Davis 3 ballades Pop éditions Henry Lemoine
This 1981 tune is dedicated to my dear friend Nora from New Rochelle.
At that time, I was invited to a recording session produced by pianist - composer Philippe Saisse for his group Wet. Philippe Saisse on piano, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Jamie Glaser on guitar and Tim Landers on bass were inspirational. The tune was called Overture; it was based partially on triads (three notes chords) placed on bass pedals and on a nice “two feel”, the type of material later used for Song For Nora.
Fay Douce - Jean-Michel Davis 3 ballades Pop éditions Henry Lemoine
I wrote this song in 1984, a year after meeting my wife Cynthia. The bass line is inspired by a harmony exercise taken from the 80 basses et chants d’Henry Challan!
I asked the writer Merlin Stone (Cynthia’s mother) to write the lyrics. After all she was the one that introduced us! She wrote then the charming words of Dancin’ In The Sky on motifs from Fay Douce. Juliette Davis (our daughter) accompanied by Joachim Polack on guitar, sings the bridge of this song as a prelude to Fay Douce.
Dancin’ in the Sky
Jean-Michel Davis Merlin Stone éditions Henry Lemoine
When you’re looking right at me
with that promise in your eye
s’ like the flight of eagles soaring high
dancin’ in the sky
I’m here standin’ on this ground
but my feet they want to fly
I could reach the rainbow’s arc - right now
dancin’ in the sky
Don’t know if you’re teasing
Playing round with me
but I love the feel of it
makin’ me spin so free
My wings are just spreadin’ out
feel the breeze as I glide by
Just that look from you does it - and I’m
dancin’ in the sky

Ethereal Vibes
After You - Mike Stern
Prior to the publication of the 10 études, one of my students showed me a lead sheet of Mike Stern’s composition After You. I then created an arrangement, which I included in the book.
I love the double bass introduction by Raphaël Schwab. I dedicate this track to my mother Ninette who passed away two years ago.
This tune is reminiscent of my NYC years during which I worked odd jobs to make a living. I developed films in Soho, in a photograph - processing store.
In order to get the right colorimetry a specific adjustment was required: 1 point yellow, 2 points magenta, 3 points cyan as an example. The main motif of the song is based on the intervals of fourths. It conflicts with the underlying harmony. The 3/4 passages are inspired by Smatter, a composition by the late horn player, Kenny Wheeler. The drum introduction is a portrayal of the extensive palette of my good friend Julien Charlet.
This inspired improvisation by Frédéric Loiseau is a transition between two tunes of different characters, as one would do in a concert. I had previously asked him to end it in the key of the following selection, Mondeville.
Mondeville is a slightly nostalgic reverie. It refers to a happy period of first transgressions, of first true friendships, of first loves. The feeling of nostalgia that is tied with this period is not an estrangement of oneself. Quite the contrary it is a vivid force, a poetic urge encouraging us to go forward and to face life.
Crystal Silence - Chick Corea
To complete the album we present this composition of Chick Corea that I had transposed from the original E minor to C minor, in the Salabert music book, thereby incorporating the vibraphone’s tessitura.
 Jean-Michel Davis
Alain Antonietto

“Following the cool jazz recording of Les Movie Swingers, the exuberance of the group Les Primitifs du Futur and the entertaining and picturesque Novelty Fox, vibraphonist Jean-Michel Davis further demonstrates his wide musical range by exploring, along with his quartet, a predominantly bebop repertory of his own compositions and arrangements. A sort of tipping his hat to Red Norvo and… Gary Burton. A real balancing act to boot!
He is accompanied by these talented and accomplished musicians who are entirely committed to this original project: Fréderic Loiseau on guitar, Raphaël Schwab on bass and Julien Charlet on drums.”
Alain Antonietto

»     Franck Tortiller
“In the world of percussion, vibraphone holds a special place. Unfortunatly it is considered a jazz instrument and does not have, as the marimba has, a significant place in serious music.
Moreover, when one speaks of great vibraphone players, only jazzmen are cited, Milt Jackson, Gary Burton, Mike Manieri, Dave Samuels, etc.
Many percussion players feel increasingly attracted to the vibraphone, especially to the jazz vibraphone. In order to satisfy this need, Jean-Michel Davis designed this collection of 10 studies.
It is not a method, but rather an access to jazz through the vibraphone. After the first pages dedicated to theory and jazz harmony, we enter the heart of the matter with a collection of standards and original compositions arranged for solo vibraphone. These eclectic pieces (one travels from Mike Stern to Duke Ellington and Chick Corea) are not aimed at beginners. Some are very difficult (I particularly recommend Stella by Starlight and 2 Points Magenta) and are in addition to their educational value, sélections that can be played in concert or even in musical compétition! What a pleasure to hear Crystal Silence, Stormy Weather and Prelude to a Kiss at the National Conservatorys of Paris and Lyon! Vibraphonists may well be accompanied by bass or piano since the chord symbols are written under each theme.
The work of Jean-Michel Davis is essential to the study of vibraphone; all technical challenges are addressed: pedaling, dampening, phrasing etc.
Also it permits today’s percussion players to broaden their musical horizon.”

From Hampton to Burton, in passing by Jackson and Hutcherson (yes, only names, without a doubt, that rhyme with vibraphone), this most complete and unlikely percussion instrument has established itself as a jazz chromatic keyboard, as rich as any piano. Under the inspired mallets of Jean-Michel Davis, with elegance and fluidity, the vibraphone is affirmed in this triptych-like album as a wonderful instrument of caressing bars: long notes lingering in the ear, cascades of crystal beads, gentle tumbling of percussions, refinement of dosages, subtlety of nuances, friction and high frequency tremors, in short, everything that gives meaning to the etymology of the vibraphone: nearer and nearer to real voice vibrations. Pascal Anquetil
