Pour « Vago », premier disque sous son nom en 1996, Marcel Loeffler, que je connaissais depuis Sweet Chorus, groupe qu’il avait formé avec le guitariste Mandino Reinhardt, m’avait fait l’honneur de me demander un petit texte de présentation ; j’y écrivais alors en conclusion : « …Marcel a tous les atouts en main pour une carrière comparable à celle d’un Richard Galliano… C’est tout le mal que je lui souhaite. »
Salué par les spécialistes depuis 20 ans, reconnu et apprécié des plus grands (Azzola, Bireli…), l’accordéoniste alsacien a joué avec tous les grands musiciens tsiganes de sa génération (Tchavolo, Dorado, Costel Nitescu, Wawau Adler, Yorgui Loeffler…) ; et s’il n’a pas une notoriété plus large, c’est que son illustre collègue Galliano est en France l’arbre qui cache la forêt !
Ce nouveau disque démontre si besoin était que Marcel est partout chez lui dans la musique ; accordéoniste ouvert et curieux il aime autant Viseur (cf son récent disque « Around Gus ») que Piazzolla (belle reprise ici d’Oblivion conjuguant respect, sobriété et musicalité), Bill Evans (Waltz for Debby où il swingue en douceur, l’occasion aussi d’un chorus flamboyant du jeune Railo Helmstetter, un client dont on va assurément reparler, invité sur deux titres à la guitare électrique) que la belle chanson française (Si tu savais de G Ullmer), Django Reinhardt que la musique classique ; cette dernière est un peu le fil conducteur de ce nouvel opus (cf la valse en mi mineur de Chopin revue et corrigée façon valse swing, Solfegietto, pièce virtuose du fils de Jean Sébastien Bach, Carl Emanuel, interprétée en solo avec un brio exceptionnel, les accents classiques de son exposé de l’envoutant Amours secret, formidable composition de Marcel où il s’envole à mi course et nous laisse KO, ou encore Fugue tempérée l’une de ses compos fétiches, ici dans une nouvelle version : ça démarre façon classique pour évoluer en swing avec deux beaux chorus de guitare, l’un acoustique de Cédric et l’autre électrique du guitariste Enge Helmstetter, oncle de Railo, lui aussi invité sur deux morceaux).  
Bien entouré par ses fidèles complices, son fils Cédric à la guitare d’accompagnement et le solide et très recherché Gautier Laurent à la contrebasse, Marcel est impérial de bout en bout, poétisant à souhait autour de la mélodie avant d’envoyer quelques belles fusées (cf Session qui ouvre le disque). On reconnait immédiatement l’élégance du phrasé de ce styliste conjuguant swing léger, lyrisme et improvisations constamment inspirées. Héritier du grand Didi Duprat, vrai rythmicien comme il y en a peu, spécialiste de la valse swing, Cédric signe aussi Englo, jolie ballade de 8’ sur laquelle Railo se fend d’un chorus limpide. Marcel joue sur un accordéon Gadji (1) ; conçu avec Stéphanie Simon, facteur d’instruments qui y a mis toute son expérience et son amour du métier (« Nous voulions un son chaud doux et profond, un accord swing proche de celui de Gus Viseur » (2), il a la puissance et la sonorité d’un accordéon classique. Entre jazz et classique, « Secrets » est sans doute le disque le plus personnel de Marcel Loeffler. Un sacré musicien ! …

I’ve known Marcel Loeffler ever since Sweet Chorus, the group he formed with guitarist Mandino Reinhardt, and when he made his first record as a leader, “Vago” (1996), Marcel asked me if I’d “do him the honour” of writing a short preface. So I wrote a note and ended it by saying, “…Marcel holds all the cards to enjoy a career comparable to that of Richard Galliano… And I wish him nothing less.”
Acclaimed by specialists for some 20 years, recognized and appreciated by the greatest (Azzola, Bireli…), the accordionist Marcel Loeffler, born in Alsace, has played with every great gypsy musician of his generation, from Tchavolo or Dorado to Costel Nitescu, Wawau Adler, Yorgui Loeffler… And if his fame has not yet spread even wider than that, then it’s because in France he has an illustrious comrade, Galliano, who is the tree hiding the forest!
If need be, this new record demonstrates that Marcel is at home with every kind of music. He’s an open-minded, curious musician who likes Gus Viseur (listen to his recent disc “Around Gus”) as much as Piazzolla (there’s a fine rereading of Oblivion here that has respect and sobriety as well as being very musical), Bill Evans (Waltz for Debby shows his soft swing, and also has a flamboyant chorus from the young Railo Helms­tetter, a serious “customer” we’re sure to hear from again after being invited to play electric guitar on two titles here), not to mention a beautiful French song (Si tu savais by G Ullmer), Django Reinhardt, or even classical music. And the latter is the thread which links this new opus. Listen to Chopin’s Valse en mi mineur revisited as a swing-waltz; there is also Solfegietto, a virtuoso piece by Carl Emanuel Bach, son of J. S. Bach, played solo here with exceptional brio; the classical accents of his introduction to the spellbinding Amours secrets, a wonderful composition by Marcel (he soars away in the middle, knocking us out cold); or Fugue tempérée, one of his favourite pieces, here in a new version. It starts classically, and then builds into swing with two fine choruses from the guitars, with Cédric playing acoustically and then an electric chorus from Enge Helmstetter, Railo’s uncle, who’s also a guest on two titles.
In the excellent company of the above, together with his son Cédric (on second guitar) and the solid, much-in-demand Gautier Laurent playing double bass, Marcel remains imperial throughout, treating melody like poetry while also firing the occasional missile (note the record’s opening title, Session.) You can immediately recognize the elegant phrasing of this stylist here; he conjugates a light swing with lyricism and improvi­sations that are constantly inspired. Cédric is the heir to the great Didi Duprat: he’s a genuine rhythm-specialist (and there are not that many) for whom the swing-waltz holds no secrets. He is also the composer of Englo, a pretty, eight-minute ballad where Railo unleashes a limpid chorus. And of course, there’s Marcel, playing his Gadji (1) accordion, the instrument he conceived with Stéphanie Simon, an instrument-maker who put all her experience (and the love of her craft) into its manufacture — “We wanted a warm sound that was soft and deep, a swing harmony close to that of Gus Viseur. (2)” This one has all that, plus the power and sound of a classical accordion.
Between jazz and the classics, this new album “Secrets” is no doubt Marcel Loeffler’s most personal record. And what a musician! …
