Yannis Constans, a prodigious Occitan guitarist who has already appeared with the greatest (Stochelo Rosenberg, Dorado and Tchavolo Schmitt, Angelo Debarre,...) plays here with Samson Schmitt, undeniably a virtuoso musician and an icon in gypsy jazz. This album is unique, with an encounter between the tradition and the modern that is filled with entente and richly coloured sounds. An unavoidable record made for those who love guitars that tread as lightly as the wind.

Born in Toulouse in 1987, Yannis Constans discovered Django Reinhardt at the age of 18 when he walked into a record store in the "Pink City." While he remembers buying three CDs of the master and seriously taking up the guitar, he had no idea that what is now commonly called "Gypsy jazz" would become such a significant part of his life.
At that time, Yannis could already have found the first album by a certain Samson Schmitt (Djieské) in the bins. The paths of these two guitarists finally crossed in 2010 at a festival in southwestern France. And by the very next year, they were sharing the stage for the first time together for the presentation of the "Welcome in Tziganie" festival.
Samson, settled with his family in Forbach (Moselle) on Rue Stéphane Grappelli (you can't make that up!), has pursued an exemplary international career; Yannis has multiplied musical collaborations and shared the stage with the greatest names in the style.
For the past fifteen years, Yannis and Samson have constantly reunited, at each other's homes, and performed together, so much so that the idea of making an album (the one you hold in your hands) became an obvious choice.
An album conceived as a trio with Camille Wolfrom on double bass, and also featuring two Sicilian talents that Yannis and Samson have known for a long time: accordionist Roberto Gervasi and clarinetist Nicola Giammarinaro.
An album made solely of compositions – if you please – and placed under the sign of family. "Anaïs" and "Por tus ojos" paint a portrait of Yannis's daughter, "Hora Adriano" is a nod to his son's overflowing energy, and "Choro pra Elea" is a bossa for his niece.
This album also features three generations of Schmitt. Dorado, Samson's father and a key figure in the revival of Gypsy jazz, plays violin on three tracks, one of which is dedicated to his own father. Two of Samson's daughters lend their voices: Stefi – seen on The Voice Kids – sings an homage to Django in Romani; Stenli tries her hand at tango.
So now there's an album by Yannis Constans and Samson Schmitt that can be found in record stores and on streaming platforms. An album that breathes swing, sensitivity, and demonstrates a musical approach open to others and the world. It's called Esperanza, which means hope, and it should be listened to with your ears and your heart.
