On May 15, 1953, at Toronto’s Massey Hall, five leading figures of bebop came together for a single appearance: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. This legendary concert captures bebop at its peak, balancing architectural rigor and blazing freedom. Driven by a powerful rhythm section, Parker and Gillespie display dazzling inventiveness. Released alongside Franck Médioni’s 240-page book Jazz at Massey Hall, this album transcends the historical document to stand as one of the greatest concerts in jazz history.

On May 15, 1953, beneath the austere vaults of Massey Hall in Toronto, a fleeting miracle took place: five titans of bebop came together for a single evening, as if fate had decided, for the span of a breath, to gather the brightest sparks of a musical revolution. Everything began in chaos: not a trace of rehearsal, musicians arriving at the last minute, a vast hall three-quarters empty, for that night all of America was glued to their screens watching the titanic clash between Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Walcott. And yet, within this apparent void, the music exploded. It burst forth with raw intensity, dizzying spontaneity, a collective invention that defied the limits of the possible. Mingus and Roach, in a quiet stroke of genius, captured the moment on tape through their young label Debut; from that recording emerged the legendary album Jazz at Massey Hall, often hailed as “the greatest jazz concert ever recorded.” It was the last great moment of bebop: its ultimate fireworks display, its dazzling swan song. Franck Médioni’s text celebrates the magic of that night, capturing the very essence of modern jazz: invention on the edge of risk, freedom won note by note, raw and untamed beauty, a pagan celebration where bodies and minds are set free. 234 pages book, in French.
