Helen Merrill 1952-1960

Helen Merrill, a vocal jazz luminary. Not just a magnificent American artist, but one of the greatest ballad singers of all time. This “complete recordings” set prepared by Olivier Julien looks back over the best years in her career, when she recorded with musicians who were all jazz legends – Earl Hines, Clifford Brown, Oscar Pettiford, Hank Jones and Bill Evans – and made superb albums in the company of producers and composers equally legendary, Quincy Jones, Gil Evans, Ennio Morricone et al.

Jean-Baptiste «Toots» Thielemans was part of the landscape for the greater part of jazz history, from the early 40s until 2016, the year of his disappearance. Belgian by birth, American by naturalization, Toots was first a guitarist, before his inimitable style led him to be considered the greatest harmonica player (and whistler) in jazz, accompanying the greatest: Count Basie, Lester Young or Billie Holiday, and then Elis Regina or Bill Evans. This set prepared by Olivier Julien puts the spotlight on the first recordings he made as a leader, among them “The Sound” and “Man Bites Harmonica”. They were his first masterpieces, and they made him a legend.

JAZZ ET MUSIQUES DE FILM 1953-1962

Michel Legrand was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. After showing great promise as a jazz arranger — working notably with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Bill Evans — he turned his hand to the French “chanson” genre and composed for Boris Vian and Henri Salvador, Jacques Brel or Maurice Chevalier. He then became probably the most famous composer of melodies for France’s Nouvelle Vague filmmakers — Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Jean-Luc Godard —, but it was only the beginning, for he went on to be one of the most illustrious film composers in the world. This 10CD set contains his works during that first great period, devoted to all the music released under his name. Patrick FRÉMEAUX

Quincy Jones counts as one of the greatest bandleaders, arrangers and trumpeters of the 20th century, a musician whose career has taken him from the world of jazz to popular music and films. Prepared by Olivier Julien, this set gives us the chance to rediscover Quincy Jones’s beginnings as a recording artist, from the early studio albums he made under his own name to his worldwide hit “Soul Bossa Nova”. This collection shows all the fervour brought to music by Quincy, a young arranger who in only a few years would become a superstar of pop.
