Eco-anxiety threatens the mental health of one in ten French people, with 420,000 of them at psychopathological risk. These are the findings of the first benchmark study of this phenomenon in France, conducted by the Observatoire de l'éco-anxiété (OBSECA), supported by Econoïa, in partnership with ADEME, and with the backing of E5t. With no population category spared, eco-anxiety is becoming a key public health issue.
Using a scientifically-built diagnostic tool, the study shows the value of understanding eco-anxiety along a continuum of increasing intensity, ranging from scattered concerns about the environmental crisis to profound psychological distress. Eco-anxiety can be seen as a sign of lucidity in the face of environmental disruption. It can be transformed into a driving force for action and resilience, even in its most intense manifestations, if it is taken care of. This groundbreaking report opens up concrete avenues to support eco-anxious people towards eco-engagement.
