FOREST AND MOUNTAINS OF CORSICA 

Introduction
Tous les paysages sonores présentés dans cet ouvrage ont été enregistrés au début du printemps (avril) en Corse-du-Sud, principalement en Montagne au pied des fameuses aiguilles de Bavella.  Tous les enregistrements présentés dans ce disque ont été réalisés entre le lever du jour et 9H du matin. Une grande attention a été portée à la restitution des “acoustiques” propres à chaque lieu ainsi qu’à la chronologie naturelle des chants, ce qui engendre un temps un peu étiré.  L’ensemble a été mis en forme dans les studios du Groupe Musiques Vivantes de Lyon.  Forets et Montagnes Corses est dédié à Micaël Reboul qui a su m’accompagner et me faire découvrir les richesses de son île.

BERNARD FORT est co-fondateur et responsable du Groupe Musiques Vivantes de Lyon. Il enseigne la composition électroacoustique à l’Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne, et ­partage le reste de son temps entre la composition et l’ornithologie. Son travail musical est entièrement ­consacré au genre acousmatique pour le concert, en salle ou en plein air, la danse, le jeune public. En ­composition, il ­s’intéresse depuis toujours aux limites entre abstraction et figuration, naturel et ­culturel.

La maison forestière  
durée : 20’26” (index de 1 à 8)
Au pied des aiguilles de Bavella qui culminent à 1850 m, la maison forestière, à près de 700 m d’altitude, bénéficie d’un véritable isolement. Un espace dégagé autour de la maison, un jardin et un potager, une vie calme permettent aux oiseaux familiers de s’établir à l’année. Dès la fin de la nuit, Sitelles, Mésanges charbonnières, Mésanges noires, Verdiers d’Europe, Pinsons des arbres en bandes nombreuses, Merles et Rouges-gorges, mais aussi Troglodyte mignon abondent dans les gros châtaigniers, érables champêtres et pins laricio. 
Près de la fontaine  
durée : 17’57” (index de 9 à 21)
A proximité d’une fontaine tirant son débit des nombreuses cascades environnantes, un bouquet d’arbres (Erables champêtres) abrite une vie intense, de la nuit finissante jusqu’au lever du soleil. Un petit Duc scops, haut perché, ponctue la fin de la nuit, rapidement chassé par une troupe de Geais des chênes. Celui qui a pris la place qu’occupait l’oiseau nocturne tente une imitation maladroite du petit Duc avant de rejoindre la troupe pour un bavardage d’une très grande richesse. Cependant, le vrai Petit duc continue de chanter plus loin. La scène sera bien vite survolée par un Faucon crécerelle. Pour éviter le son trop envahissant de la fontaine, le microphone se déplace lentement autour du bouquet d’arbres. Surviennent alors, avec le lever du jour, une Mésange bleue, une Fauvette à tête noire au loin, et surtout des Pics épeiches occupés à tambouriner mais aussi à se nourrir en frappant les troncs. Mésange noire, Rouge-gorge, Coucou d’Europe au loin, alarmes des pics, Grimpereau des jardins, Pinson des arbres, Verdier d’Europe, Mésange charbonnière alors qu’une pluie très légère et à peine audible commence à tomber. 
En forêt  
durée : 15’55” (index de 22 à 31)
Au plus profond de la forêt (principalement le Pin laricio), dès les premières lueurs du jour : le chant sonore et le léger babil d’une Mésange noire ponctués par l’agitation d’une Sitelle dans les arbres. Avec le jour bien installé, le Coucou d’Europe se fait entendre au loin au milieu des nombreux tambourinages de Pics ­épeiches. Puis la Grive draine au sommet d’un grand arbre, débute un long solo. Le Troglodyte mignon nous fait entendre un chant puissant et très particulier, rempli de petits sons explosifs, de grattements variés alors qu’une Mésange Bleue alarme, bientôt rejointe par d’autres mésanges. La plage se prolonge avec une Mésange charbonnière, elle aussi présentant des chants diversifiés et bien particulier puis enfin le chant fragile du Roitelet triple bandeau.
En bord de mer  
durée : 7’55” (index 32)
À l’extrême Sud de la Corse, une petite plage de rochers fait face à la Sardaigne toute proche et aux îles de la Madeleine. A cet endroit précis, à quelques pas des vagues, accrochée à un petit buisson épineux, une Fauvette pitchou chante, indifférente aux vents violents qui la secouent d’une manière spectaculaire.

Introduction
All the soundscapes presented in this CD were recorded in early spring (April) in the southern part of Corsica, principally in the mountains at the foot of the well known “aiguilles de Bavella”. They were all recorded between dawn and 9 o’clock in the morning. Great care has been taken to reproduce each sites proper acoustics as well as the natural chronology of the songs, which sometimes leads to a slightly longer recording time. Production was at the “Groupe Musiques Vivantes” studios in Lyon Forests and Mountains of Corsica is dedicated to Micaël Reboul who accompanied me and showed mean the remarkable riches of his island.

Bernard Fort is co-founder and presently in charge of the “Groupe Musiques Vivantes de Lyon” (the Lyon Living Music Group). He teaches electro-acoustic composing at the “Ecole ­Nationale de Musique” de Villeurbanne (Villeurbanne National School of Music), and spends his spare time birdwatching or composing. His work in music is devoted to electro-acoustic for concerts, in the studio or outdoors, for dance and young public. As a composer he has always been ­interested in the limit between abstract and the real, natural and cultural.

The foresters house

At the foot of “aiguilles de Bavella” which rise up to 1850 ­metres, the foresters house, at an altitude of 700 m, is ­totally isolated. The calm of the clearing around the house with garden and vegetable plot is occupied throughout the year by familiar birds. As dawn arrives, Nuthatch, Great and Coal Tits, Greenfinch, numerous Chaffinches, Blackbird and Robin as well as the Wren are numerous in the large Sweet Chestnuts, Field Maples and Corsican Pine.  
Next to the fountain

Near a fountain that collects water from the numerous waterfalls nearby, a group of trees (Field maples) hide a hive of activity, from the last of the night to sunrise. A Scops Owl, on a high perch, punctuates the twilight, quickly followed by a group of Jays. The bird that took the place of the nocturnal species gives a bad imitation of the owl before ­rejoining its flock in a rich chatter. Meanwhile, the real owl picks up its song farther away. Shortly a Kestrel flies over the whole scene. In avoid the invasive sound of the fountain, the microphone it moved near the copse. Various species follow each other with the dawn, a Blue Tit, a Blackcap in the distance, and especially Great Spotted ­Woodpeckers drumming and looking for food by hitting the trunks. Coal Tit, Robin, a distant Cuckoo, alarm calls of Woodpeckers, Short-toed Treecreeper, Chaffinch, Greenfinch and Great Tit as a light, hardly audible rain, starts to fall.

In the depth of the forest (mainly of Corsican Pines), at the first light of dawn: the musical soft warble of a Coal Tit is ­broken by the agitated calls of a Nuthatch in the trees. Once into the day, the Cuckoo can be heard in the distance amongst a lot of drumming by Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Then a Mistle Thrush gives a long solo from the top of a ­tall tree. A Wren gives a powerful and unusual song, full of short ­explosive and varied scratchy notes whilst a Blue Tit gives an alarm call, soon to be joined by other tits. The track continues with a Great Tit, also with a varied song that’s quite unusual, followed by the discreet song of a Firecrest. 
Next to the sea

At the extreme southern tip of Corsica, a small rocky beach looks towards nearby Sardinia and the Madeleine islands. Right here, just a short distance from the waves, griping to a thorny bush, a Dartford Warbler sings with heed of the strong wind that swings the bird round alarmingly.
