From the Caliphate of Córdoba to contemporary historians, each era has reinvented Muslim Spain in its own image. At times a model of civilization, at times a symbol of decadence; at times proof of Spain’s European identity, at times evidence of its openness to the Mediterranean world.
Through an original investigation into the successive interpretations of al-Andalus, Gabriel Martinez-Gros invites us to explore not only the history of Muslim Spain, but also the ways in which it has been viewed. He shows how each era has reconstructed the Andalusian past in order to give it a meaning consistent with its own values. Behind the events emerge the worldviews that shape them; behind the facts, the systems of thought that make them intelligible. The history of al-Andalus thus becomes the history of its successive interpretations: a journey through more than a millennium of narratives, shedding as much light on Muslim Spain as on the ways in which societies construct their own past.
