Presentation

Sonny Criss is an unsung hero in the history of jazz. A brilliant alto saxophonist of the bebop era, his unparalleled talent
nevertheless remained in the shadow of Charlie Parker. Published at the same time as Alain Gerber's biographical novel Ne laissez pas le soleil se lever sur vos larmes (Don't Let the Sun Rise on Your Tears), this anthology highlights the musician's extraordinary virtuosity and expressiveness.
An unexpected tribute to one of the greatest forgotten masters of 20th-century jazz.

SÉLECTION D’ALAIN GERBER ASSISTÉ PAR JEAN BUZELIN ET JEAN-PAUL RICARD

What if fake biographies were more truthful than scholarly ones? With impressionistic language, Alain Gerber lends his voice to saxophonist Sonny Criss and recounts not the facts but the lived experience of jazz.
Through these imaginary memoirs, a sensitive truth emerges: Black California in the 1950s, with its smoke-filled clubs, fragile heroes, and the protective shadow of Charlie Parker. We encounter Dizzy, Dexter Gordon, Teddy Edwards, Hampton Hawes, Eric Dolphy, and a whole generation of musicians torn between marginality and greatness. This book is not a historical reconstruction: it is an immersion in the atmosphere, emotion, and condition of these creators, filling the silence left by Sonny Criss, whose written voice we sorely missed.
