Born in 1926, American musician Jimmy Gourley was an early “guitar hero” who shaped the history of jazz, particularly in France where he settled in 1951. This anthology, which appears together with his official biography, is a major event that brings together the guitarist’s most emblematic recordings, including tracks that have never been released until now. Before he passed away aged 82, Gourley played not only with American stars but also in more intimate surroundings, such as his duo with son Sean Gourley. This set gives real insight into how this great guitarist’s six strings had the French capital vibrating for half a century.

An American in Paris 1951-2002
By Jean-Paul Ricard
It was in April 1951 that the man who was to become the most Parisian American in Paris set sail for Europe and settled in the capital. Real name James Pasco Gourley, Jr. was born on June 9, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, a traveling salesman, took the family to Chicago in 1932. There, he founded the Monarchy Conservatory of Music in 1936. In 1938, his Spanish-born mother introduced him to the melodies of her homeland and taught him to play the guitar.
Three years later, his classmate Lee Konitz invited him to join their school orchestra, and he gave his first concerts, followed by a number of professional engagements around Los Angeles. In 1944, Jimmy beat the call to enlist in the Navy and spent two years on a Pacific island without making music.
Demobilized in June 1946, he returned to Chicago determined to play guitar and join the local music scene. This he did with Jimmy Dale’s orchestra, in which he found Lee Konitz, and by making friends with some of the musicians in Jay Burkhart’s modern orchestra: Lou Levy, Sandy Mosse, Cy Touf and, above all, guitarist Jimmy Raney, whose influence he would come to disciple. In 1972, he explained: “If my first influence was Charlie Christian, I was later to be influenced by Jimmy Raney, whom I met in 1946 in Chicago. Raney was already an immense guitarist, and I was greatly impressed by his playing. We became great friends. This close friendship was of great benefit to me. There was also another guitarist in Chicago who played fantastically, Ronnie Singer. He played with Artie Shaw for a while, but sadly passed away prematurely”¹. Gourley added: “As I’ve already said about Lester Young, I was very influenced by the playing of tenor saxophonists like Al Cohn, Zoot Sims and Stan Getz.”².
In January 1948, Jimmy Gourley replaced his friend at Jay Burkhart’s, and also played with Vido Musso and in the band of singer Jackie Cain and pianist Roy Kral. At the end of 1950, concerned about the ravages of drugs among musicians and informed that an active scene existed in France, he decided to leave Chicago to begin a new career in Europe.
He settled in Paris, where he struck up a friendly relationship with pianist Henri Renaud that enabled him to make his mark on the Parisian music scene. He played at Tabou, Club Saint-Germain and Boeuf sur le Toit, led a quartet with Martial Solal at Ringside and accompanied all his American colleagues visiting Paris. At the same time (1953-1954), he took part in numerous recording sessions with Henri Renaud, Bobby Jaspar, Lee Konitz, Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, Zoot Sims, The Third Herdsmen, Bob Brookmeyer, Roy Haynes and Buddy Banks. In November 1954, he formed a quintet with Henri Renaud and Barney Wilen, then decided to return to Chicago.
There, Jimmy Gourley formed a quintet with Sandy Mosse and pianist Eddie Baker, played and recorded with bassist Chubby Jackson’s orchestra (1956-1957), accompanied singer Anita O’Day (1957) and, at the end of the year, returned to Paris.
In the spring of 1958, he performed at the newly opened Mars Club with pianist Art Simmons and double bassist Michel Gaudry. After the summer, the guitarist and his quartet played at the Blue Note, a new Paris club where they accompanied Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Lester Young, Sonny Stitt, Bud Powell and J.J. Johnson. On March 14, 1959, Jimmy takes part in Lester Young’s last, twilight session.
From one club to the next, the guitarist overflowed with activities and collaborations. Notably with drummer Kenny Clarke, with whom he accompanies organist Lou Bennett. Together they recorded a successful album, Amen (1960), and toured Europe. At the end of the year, Jimmy Gourley takes part in the recording of the soundtrack to the film Paris Blues, with music arranged by Duke Ellington. In October 1961, he is invited to Warsaw by pianist Krysztof Komeda. In 1963, he toured Europe and North Africa with Kenny Clarke. In 1966, Eddy Louiss replaced Lou Bennett in the still-active trio. Jimmy then worked in the Canary Islands (1970-1972) before returning to Paris, where he performed with various groups at the Club Saint-Germain, the Bilboquet and the Caveau de la Montagne.
During the 70s and 80s, he recorded several albums under his own name, a selection of which can be found on the 3rd CD of our compilation. Here he demonstrates, if proof were needed, the elegance of his playing, his melodic inventiveness, and the rigor of his rhythmic placement. A talent recognized by his American colleagues, who welcomed him warmly during his stays in the USA, where he played in a duo with guitarist Mundell Lowe and recorded The Left Bank of New York with Ralph Moore, Don Sicker, Marc Johnson and Victor Lewis (1986) for the Uptown label.
In 1989 Jimmy Gourley recorded with guitarist Christian Escoudé, and in 1994 he took French nationality, continuing to perform in European clubs and festivals until the end of the 90s. He died on December 7, 2008, aged 82, in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges.
